Proposed Upgrades to Internal Staff Tool Informed by Extensive Investigation

CONTEXT

The File Markup and Redaction Tool is housed on the Xometry staff-facing platform to allow viewers to modify, change, and re-upload PDFs or images without downloading them. It is mainly used by our DFM (Design For Manufacturing) team to redact ordered part files, like assembly drawings, necessary for providing files to manufacturing partners without proprietary information.

Objective

Perform an extensive UX audit and explore different redesign directions while producing project artifacts for future use.

DISCOVERY

I interviewed many staff users to gain a deep understanding of the DFM team's flow from order creation to outsourcing parts, which encompasses the use of the tool.

KEY LEARNINGS

  • Disorganization of information across multiple pages.

  • Need to cutdown navigation and scrolling time within tool interface.

  • Longer time to process repeat orders than net-new customers.

Outcomes

I dissected complex experiences within the Xometry platforms for customers, partners, and staff into detailed journey maps and presentations. I drafted wireframes and prototypes to collect feedback while preparing project deliverables and quick wins for the engineering team to highlight the need for future work. With more time, I would conduct user testing with the DFM team as well as working with engineering to problem-solve API drawbacks.

  • Produced detailed document with actionable items sorted from short to long term with the head of product management in regards to improving the DFM workflow.

  • Achieved updated releases within the File Markup and Redaction Tool experience including key working concerns about viewing associated Purchase Orders, text-editing, and bugs.

  • Created detailed user flows, wireframes, and files for clear access and reuse.
